Snowy Day photos
Snow Days
It's fun to play in the snow but after a while children need something else to do.  Please encourage your child to write about how they spend their time off.  We would love to read stories, both with and without drawings and photos, about our students' snow day experiences!!  Hopefully, they also have a good book to read.

Please also direct your child to the grade level websites link on the left for some fun and educational activities.  Many of our teachers have also included websites and activities on their classroom pages as well.

Check out the Latest News in Photos to remind yourself of the wonderful activities and experiences we have at Westridge.  The Westridge web page is a great way to use some of your extra time during inclement weather.

New curtain
Thank you, PTA, for the new curtain for the stage!!  It looks great.  A photo will be published as soon as we get back to school.
POSTPONED -National Bubble Gum Day
The date for this event will be updated after we know how the winter storm will affect us.

February 5 is National Bubble Gum Day.  KORT has been asked to sponsor this day and send the proceeds to Haiti.  Here's how it works. Students who give their teachers $.50, may chew gum they bring in to school only on the afternoon of February 5 (or anytime after Career Day is finished).  KORT officers will collect the money and have it sent to the Red Cross to help the earthquake victims in Haiti.  Check the KORT page for a little more information.  Let's help our world neighbors!

Career Day
Updates for Career Day will be posted as soon as that information is available.

School Counselor Week
February 1 - 5 is School Counselor Week.  When you see Mrs. Smith or Ms. Linton remember to thank them for all they do for Westridge!
School of Excellence Celebration
Dr. Walts visited Westridge today to present Mrs. Hayden with our 7th School of Excellence Award in the nine year history of this honor.  Westridge is one of very few schools in the county to have received the award so many times.  Dr. Walts also took special note of the Westridge choir, another rare but much appreciated part of such celebrations.  Both the Boys and Girls Student Activity Directors gave speeches thanking Mrs. Hayden and the staff for supporting the students and helping making Westridge the excellent school that it is.  The PTA provided beautiful cakes to add to our celebration.  Check the Latest News in Photos to see more of the celebration.
DVD drive
Thank you for your generous contribution to KORT's VHS/DVD drive for Potomac Hospital.  Four large boxes of movies have been delivered!   **Potomac Hospital has asked for additional DVD's only due to the limited number of VCR's players they have available.

We will leave the collection box in the main hall for a couple more weeks in case you still wish to share any more DVD's which you no longer use.
Going Green
Mrs. Smith  and the KORT officers will be providing an opportunity for students to demonstrate their caring traits by participating in Pennies for Patients in March.

We are "going green” this year so donations of any large containers that can be used for collection would be appreciated!  (For example, empty containers that held candy, chips, etc). Your child may give them to Mrs. Smith, our guidance counselor.  Thank you in advance.
Spontaneous Invitational Odyssey of the Mind
Congratulations Westridge Odyssey of the Mind:  One of six Westridge's Odyssey of the Mind teams, Team Venturino, participated in this weekend's Thomas Jefferson High School Spontaneous Invitational.  The Spontaneous competition is a half-day event where middle school and elementary teams can come and practice a variety of problems where they will receive feedback from trained judges.  Some spontaneous problems build verbal skills, some build mechanical skills, and some build both, but all will challenge creative problem-solving talents. Participants are given one of the problem types and as a team they have 4 minutes to prepare and 2 minutes to present their answer.  Congratulations Team Venturino:  Logan Venturino, Olivia Venturino, Nick Dunard, Logan Garren, Dominique Ardis, Emma Johnson, Ally Carswell  Coach:  Lee Venturino. Check out the Latest News in Photos link!

Communication

We are here to provide the best education and learning environment possible for our Westridge Knights.  If ever you have a concern, the teacher involved should be the first person you speak to about it.   It is best to schedule a conference as soon as a need arises.  Talking face to face always seems to work best especially at the beginning of the school year as parents, teachers and students are getting to know one another.  After a relationship is established, a phone call may be sufficient.  Email may be a tool to set up a conference, but not to conduct any extended dialogue.

If after a teacher conference you wish further discussion, please contact Mrs. Bush for Grades K - 3 and Mrs. Hayden for Grades 4, 5 and Specialists. The more we work together, the greater the benefit to our students!
