Westridge Artwork Honored at Festival
The arts festival on Saturday, April 18th was a success!

Ms. Hawkins was told, by one grandparent, that our display almost made her cry. She went on to say that she was just so amazed by the abilities of our students and explained how she wished she had had art class when she was in school. It was wonderful to see our students and parents beaming with pride at their artwork on display.

Only one artwork per school is honored with a white ribbon at the county-wide art exhibit. This means that the artwork is chosen out of over 90 pieces and all six grade levels!

This year 3rd grader Melani Melendez achieved that honor for her copper relief. After learning about the process of this type of art, Melani planned out a design, drew it on a piece of paper, taped the paper to the copper square, pressed in the design (working on the both sides of the image), and then used ink to finish it off. Her resulting piece is detailed, beautiful, and well-deserving of the white ribbon this year.

Melendez’s work will be framed and displayed at the Kelly Leadership Center for the 2015-2016 school year so that it may be enjoyed by all. Make sure to offer her your congratulations on this grand achievement!!

Cafeteria Update

April is Vitamin B month! We will focus on the importance of breads and grains. Our contest this month is to guess how many teaspoons are in the jar. The jar is on the lunch line. I will put out slips of paper where students can write down their guess. The closest guess will win the book " Knead it, Punch it, Bake it!"

Guidance Update
In Guidance this month students will be learning to identify good and bad touches, as well as, how to ask for help in situations when touch makes you feel uncomfortable. K-3 will be learning during their regularly schedule Guidance lessons. 3-5th will have an assembly presented by Theatre IV, a division of the Virginia Repertory Theatre. If you'd like to know more about Theatre IV and the Hugs and Kisses Assembly, information is available at this website: http://www.theatreiv.org/hugs/index.html

An information letter will be going out to 3-5th graders this week.
"Purple Up!" Day is Friday, April 17!
April is designated as the "Month of the Military Child" and to celebrate our military families and kids here at Westridge, we are asking students and staff to wear purple on Friday, April 17.  Purple is the color that symbolizes all branches of the military. Purple is the combination of Army green, Coast Guard blue, Air Force blue, Marine red and Navy blue.  Let's show our support to the brave men, women and their families who have served and are currently serving our country today.  Let’s Purple up, Westridge!
Wall of Heroes for our Military Students
In honor of "Month of the Military Child" we are asking our military students to bring in a picture of their military family/parent to display on our Wall of Heroes.  Please send in pictures to Mrs. Fasana or Mrs. Hanger by Friday, April 10. Pictures may be a computer print-out as it will not be returned to the students.

Tdap Shot Required of Rising 6th Graders
All students entering 6th grade in September, 2015, are required to have a tetanus, diphtheria and pertussis (Tdap) booster.  Your child cannot start school in September without record of this immunization on file.  It is important to prepare for the Tdap vaccine now.  Documentation from the doctor or Health Department should be presented to the school nurse as soon after your child has received their immunization.  Make your appointment now to help your child be prepared for middle school!

Gifted Education Program Information
START Program serves Grades K-3
SIGNET Program serves Grades 4-5

Prince William County strives to provide a continuum of services for the learning needs of all students. Westridge Elementary is fortunate to have a Gifted Education Program on site to serve our students in grades K-5.  Each year the Gifted Education teacher reviews files, SOL scores, and talks with teachers and parents to create a pool of candidates to evaluate for possible Gifted Education services.  This type of evaluation is ongoing throughout the school year.

Additionally, in the spring of every school year, following the formal aptitude testing completed in third grade, the Gifted Education teacher reviews the scores, talks with teachers and parents, and determines possible candidates for evaluation.  This is referred to as our “Third Grade Screening.”

Students can be nominated by parents or teachers, community members or themselves.  Once nominated, school records, standardized test scores, grades, information from parents and teachers, additional testing and evaluations are completed by the Gifted Education teacher and samples of student work are reviewed by a school profile review committee and then submitted to the county identification/placement committee for a decision.

The gifted education program is designed to offer a variety of educational opportunities that provide enrichment and extension of the county curriculum.  To be placed for services, students must demonstrate very strong verbal and/or quantitative aptitude and demonstrate a need for extension beyond what can be reasonably provided by the classroom teacher.

If you would like to nominate your child, please contact Mrs. Mills-Lough, Gifted Education Teacher, at Westridge.  millslm@pwcs.edu or 703-590-3711.

In order for evaluations to be completed during the 2014-2015 school year, please refer to the strict timelines below,
•3rd grade nominations must be received no later than February 20, 2015
•5th grade nominations must be received no later than April 30, 2015
•K, 1st, 2nd, 4th grade nominations must be received no later than April 23, 2015.

2015-16 Transfer Requests

Change in Walker Dismissal Procedure
Starting on Monday, January 12, 2015, a new dismissal procedure and time will begin for all of our students who walk home from school each day. Due to concerns for the safety of all our Westridge students and families, walkers will now be dismissed at 4:00 p.m. from door 10. Several factors including the high volume of cars parked along Knightsbridge Drive, cars parked in the designated No Parking area, U-Turns, and the high volume of vehicles have made the conditions hazardous for our families who walk.

By dismissing the walker students at 4:00 p.m., it is my hope that the volume of vehicles will be significantly less, and therefore provide a safer environment for our families who walk home. I have also contacted the Prince William County Police and have asked that the area be patrolled during our dismissal time, again to ensure the safety of our families.

Please remember that the policy of Westridge is that students who are car riders are picked up inside the school parking lot in the designated areas. I realize that at times this line may move slowly, but our procedures are put in place to ensure the safety of all our families.

Traffic Concerns on Knightsbridge Drive
To our Westridge Families:

Please remember to drive safely and watch out for our children during pick up and drop off. Please remember that all car riders should be picked up in the school parking lot and not on Knightsbridge Drive. The exit at door 10 is intended for walkers only.

Thank you for ensuring the safety of all our children
Cafeteria Menu
Our cafeteria has a variety of menu options for our students each day. New this year, please see the Prince William County Schools calendar that came home on the first day of school. Behind each month is that month's menu. You can also view the menu online under our Cafeteria section to the left.
